 Migrating to Geodatabase

With the advancement in spatial technologies, new spatial concepts and  data models are coming up, and along the same line, MENRIS, also, realized the need of adopting these new developments to be compatible with new GIS world. In this regard, MENRIS has already migrated its GIS platform from ArcInfo (PC, UNIX) and ArcView to ArcGIS and converted its GIS training modules accordingly. On other hand, MENRIS holds large amount of spatial database of the HKH region at various scales and various levels through different projects and case studies, which all are in ArcInfo (coverages) and ArcView (shape files) format. It has become necessary to convert these existing spatial databases to ArcGIS platform, i.e. the Geodatabase, to be able utilize full functionalities of the system. Geodatabase is based on object-oriented data model concept and is fundamentally used by ArcGIS software. The process of migrating the existing databases into Geodatabase has been initiated by developing a data model for converting the Kathmandu Valley GIS database as a pilot study. This data model could be applicable for the conversion of other datasets or may need some modifications depending upon the type and nature of datasets. Work is going on to develop a comprehensive data model for the HKH to accommodate data at various scales and themes.
