UNDP Disaster
Training Workshop
A Training Workshop on Total Disaster Risk
Management was organised by
UNDP from 11 to 13 May in Kathmandu. About 20 participants from
different government offices, INGO and NGOs along with delegates from Japan
and Philippines participated in the workshop. Mr. Rajesh Thapa from
MENRIS
attended the training and presented two papers on Applying GIS in Total
Disaster Risk Management and Modes of Information Gathering and Analysis
for GIS: Examples and Case Demonstrations.
Workshop in
Tribhuvan University
The
Department of Geography, Tribhuvan University organised a “Refresher
Workshop cum Training on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote
Sensing” for University Teachers from 1 to 6 June 2003. Mr. Govinda
Joshi and Mr. Rajesh Thapa from MENRIS gave presentation on GPS and
Remote Sensing. MENRIS provided copies of "GIS
for Beginner’s" for the training.
Seminar
on Health Impact of Air Pollution
A
seminar was organized on Health Impact of Air Pollution by Environment Sector Programme Support (ESPS)/MoPE,
Clean Energy Nepal (CEN) and Centre of Science and Environment (CSE) on
13th June 2003 in Kathmandu. Ms. Bidya Banmali participated in the
workshop from ICIMOD.
Workshop on Disaster
Preparedness
Mr.
Rupak Rajbhandari from MENRIS attended the National Workshop on
Pre-monsoon Disaster Preparedness organised by Nepal Centre for Disaster
Management (NCDM) in collaboration with the Ministry of Home
Affairs/HMG, UNDP, Action Aid Nepal, Lutheran World Federation and
United Mission to Nepal in Kathmandu on 27 June 2003.
HKH-Friend
Meeting
Mr. Rupak Rajbhandari
participated in the Third Steering Committee Meeting of HKH-Friend
held in ICIMOD from 7 – 8 May 2003.
Visit to The Mountain Institute
Mr.
Andrew Inglis visited Dudhkunda in Nepal from 6 to 15 June 2003
on invitation of The Mountain Institute (TMI) for study of high altitude
wetlands program especially on vegetation baseline survey using GPS.
Observations were made on the potential GLOF of the lake in the area,
which is a major concern of the people living around the lake and
downstream villages.
Field
Visit to Sun Koshi Hydropower Plant
Bidya Banmali from MENRIS took part in a field trip to Sun Koshi
Hydropower plant on 17th June 2003. The field trip was organized
by Ministry of Population and Environment under its Five Day Training
Course on Environmental Impact Assessment and Hydropower
Development.
Talk Programme
A one day talk program on
“Study on Meteorological Flows and Air Pollution Transport over the
Kathmandu Valley” and “Impacts of Climate Changes on Water Resources of
Nepal: A Case Study of TSHO ROLPA Glacier Lake” was organised by the
Centre for Pollution Studies, Institute of Engineering in Kathmandu on
20 June 2003. Mr. Pradeep Mool and Ms. Bidya Banmali from MENRIS participated in the talk program.
Exhibition at
BICC
At
the invitation of the Ministry of Population and Environment, MOPE/HMG,
ICIMOD took part in a three-day Exhibition at BICC from 5-7 June
2003. To celebrate the ‘International Year for Fresh Water’
and to coincide with this years World Environment Day’s theme of
‘Water - Two Billion People are Dying for It!’
a quiz contest on
environment focusing on water issues for junior (2-6 class) and senior
(7-12 class) students was set up in the stall and prizes awarded to the
winners.
MENRIS VISITS
Visit
to CSDMS
MENRIS team visited CSDMS, Noida on 18 May to discuss the development of
the interactive CD-ROM on Indicators of
Development of Nepal. ICIMOD, SNV-Nepal and the CBS, HMG/Nepal are jointly developing
the CD-ROM.
In this regard, Mr. Maneesh Kumar and Mr. Saurab, from CSDMS visited MENRIS from 15 to 18 June 2003.
Visit to IIT-Roorkee
MENRIS team visited Alternative Hydro Energy Centre -
Roorkee in the
Indian Institute of Technology on 19 May and discussed on various
collaborative issues. The Centre mainly focused on small hydro and worked
as a national centre for India. Nevertheless, the centre also worked for
other countries like Nepal, Iran and Mongolia.
Visit to IAAS,
Chitawan 
Ms.
Bidya Banmali and Ms. Monica Moktan visited IAAS Campus in Rampur from 7
to 8 June 2003 in connection with getting the air pollution samples
and to hand over the two computers donated to
IAAS by
ICIMOD.

Professor Barry
N. Haack
Prof. Barry N. Haack visited MENRIS on 2 April 2003 and had discussions
on various aspects of GIS applications at ICIMOD. He has been offered the position of visiting
scientist to ICIMOD for one year. He is a professor of Geographic and
Cartographic Sciences in George Mason University, Virginia, US.

Siddique
Mr.
Q. I. Siddique, the former Chief Engineer of Local Government Engineering Department,
Bangladesh, along with Professor Mir Muhammad and Dr. Zahir Hussain visited ICIMOD
on 4 April 2003.
GLEAM Forum
A
group from Forum for Globally – Integrated Assessment Modelling (the GLEAM
Forum) visited MENRIS on
24 May. Mr. Walter Immerzeel from MENRIS made presentation on the
eco-regional project and it’s models, and discussed on ways of possible
future collaborations. The GLEAM group consisted of Dr. Guenther
Fischer from International Institute for Applied System Analysis (IIASA),
Austria; Dr. Mikoko Kainuma, National Institute of Environmental Studies
(NIES), Japan; Dr. Hemamala Hettige, Asian Development Bank (ADB); Dr.
Henricus Benardus Maria Hilderrink, National Institute of Health and
Environment (RIVM), The Netherlands; Dr. Bert de Vries, (RIVM), The
Netherlands and Dr. Zafar Adeel, United Nations University (UNU), Japan.

Budhwar
Major Gen. V. S. Budhwar, AVSM, VSM, Director General Resettlement from
India Army visited MENRIS on 6 June while on a visit to Nepal in
connection with execution of various welfare projects being
implemented by the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu for the benefit of
Government of India pensioners.

Mr.
Rajamani, ex board member of ICIMOD, visited MENRIS from 22 to 25
June.
ISNAR
Evaluation Team
Dr. Nyima Tashi from TAAAS, Lhasa, Dr Hortan and
Dr. W. Andriesse from ISNAR, Netherlands and Dr. Tej Partap from CSK
Himanchal Pradesh Agricultural University attended the meeting held in
ICIMOD from 17 to 23 April to evaluate the 1st phase of the eco-regional
project.
Exposure visits
to MENRIS
Orientation for 15 students of Purbanchal University was conducted in
MENRIS on 8 and 9 May.
