 Regional Training Course 

A regional training course on Inventory of glaciers, glacial lakes and glacial lake outburst flood monitoring and early warning systems in the Hindu Kush- Himalayan region was conducted from 28 July to 8 August in collaboration with Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN - Japan).  Eleven participants from China, India, and Pakistan participated in the GLOF training. During the workshop, Martin Rice, programme manager from APN-Japan visited ICIMOD and reviewed the progress made by the project as well as interacted with the participants. Six participants from Tibet Autonomous Region, China were awarded internships at MENRIS-ICIMOD for additional two-weeks after the training course.

A Refresher Course on Application of Geo-informatics for Disaster Management was organized from 15 to 25 September in collaboration with the International Institute of geo-information and earth sciences (ITC), Netherlands. Altogether 25 participants from RMCs and the Asia-Pacific region benefited from the training course. ICIMOD had signed a MoU with ITC in December 2002 to collaborate and cooperate in geo-informatics capacity building and applications development to mountain environment. This course was supported by NUFFIC programme of the Dutch Government through ITC.

 National Training Course

A regional training course on “GIS/ RS for Resources Management” was conducted from 1 -13 September 2003 in Swat, Pakistan jointly with the National Centre of Excellence in Geology (NCEG), University of Peshawar and ICIMOD. The training was organized for self-paying participants from different organizations in Pakistan and all the logistics were managed by NCEG. ICIMOD provided the support of resource persons and the training materials, and the cost of four participants from Afghanistan. There were altogether 30 participants from different professional background which includes 9 participants from NCEG and other different institutions in Pakistan and Afghanistan. It is the first time that participants from Afghanistan have been included in ICIMOD’s GIS training program. The training was conducted using ArcGIS software and the course included lectures, hands-on exercises and group project works. The closing session was organized at NCEG conference hall in Peshawar and was chaired by the Vice Chancellor of Peshawar University. He also gave away certificates to the participants. Presentations were made on “GIS activities at ICIMOD” and “the Mountain GIS Portal” during the closing ceremony.

 System Support and Networking

As a part of networking and support to national institutions, MENRIS has provided support to different national institutions in the region through visits, e-mail and other means of communications. ARCGIS and ARC IMS (software licenses) have been provided to institutions in Bangladesh, Tibet and Bhutan.

ICIMOD supported a staff member each from Institute of Agriculture and Animal Sciences (IAAS), Chitwan and Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, Kathmandu, to undertake the training in air pollution monitoring held in Delhi, India from 4-8 August.
