MENRIS
Database Catalogue
There is continuing
growth in databases at MENRIS, developed through project activities or
acquired through different sources from outside. A systematic approach has
been taken to Catalogue these GIS database, image database and map
database.
GIS database Catalogue:
An integrated data Catalogue has been maintained for all the available GIS
datasets for easy access and retrieval through a standard metadata for the
HKH region. Catalogue is maintained in the MS SQL format and can be
accessed through the Mountain GIS Portal.

Image
Catalogue: As the utility of the satellite images are continually on
the rise, the image database size is growing. A Catalogue system has been
designed in MS Access, which holds all the necessary information about the
satellite image with the quick look facility. The system is aimed to serve
as the metadata for the satellite image database and will be integrated
into the Mountain GIS Portal. |

Map
Catalogue: A system has been devised in order to systematically
archive the maps that are produced by ICIMOD. This electronically based
map-Cataloguing system with easy to use interface and searching map
database capability is made available through the Mountain GIS Portal.

Database
Development, Support and Exchange
Since its inception,
MENRIS has made continuing attempt to develop database for multi-sectoral
analysis and to encourage information exchange among the participating
member countries. Through the active networking support, considerable
information has been gathered from Tibet Autonomous Region of China,
Myanmar, Nepal and the rest of the HKH region. Improved relations with
United States geological Survey (USGS) has proved very fruitful in the
acquisition of many satellite data products for the HKH region.
In addition, MENRIS
receives numerous requests for its data products. It has been providing
support to various Integrated Programmes within ICIMOD, as well as to many
academic, research and government institutions both within and beyond the
region.
RHDC
Phase I Completed
Under
the overall framework of the HKH-FRIEND, the first phase of RHDC has been
completed and final report has been submitted to CEH, UK. The project has
been able to establish a foundation of RHDC in terms of technical
infrastructure. The hydrological web data portal
(www.hkh-friend.net)
has
been launched. Two MoUs with Nepal and Bangladesh have been signed with
regard to exchange of hydrological information. The proposal has been
submitted to DFID through CEH for the second phase for networking in the
region and populating databases.
