GLOF Dissemination Workshop in Tibet Autonomous Region of China

A GLOF dissemination workshop was organised to finalize the APN 2003-5 GLOF report under the project APN 2003-5 on “Inventory of Glaciers and Glacial Lakes and the Identification of Potential Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) affected by Global Warming in the Mountains of Himalayan Region”. As the second year phase of APN supported programme, study on two sub-basins Poiqu and Rongxer of Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) of PR China, were carried out whereas in the first year phase (2002-2003), the study was carried out for Pumqu basin of Arun basin in China. Project work activities in China are being carried out in collaboration with CAREERI, Lanzou and BHT of Tibet under the direct supervision of ICMOD professionals and several professionals from BHT, CAREERI have been trained at ICIMOD and on-the-job training to carry out the project activities. Tailor made course on “Geo-informatics for Watershed Management in HKH”

The first component of the tailor–made training on “Geo-Informatics for Integrated Water Resources Management” was organized during 7th June to 2nd July, 2004, in Kathmandu, Nepal, in joint collaboration between the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and the International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC), and supported by NUFFIC. The primary objective of the course was to build the capabilities of institutions and organizations in the Hindu Kush-Himalayan (HKH) region in applying geo-informatics, hydrological modeling and watershed management tools to enhance informed decision making in water resources management related issues.

The duration of the course is 16 weeks, and is divided into three main components. The first component (June 7 – July 2, 2004) was held at ICIMOD, Kathmandu, Nepal. The second component (July 5 – August 20, 2004) will consist of the development of case studies, and will take place at the organization in the home countries of the participants. The third component (August 23 – September 24, 2004) will take place at ITC in the Netherlands. The course consist following modules:

Module 1: Water issues in the Himalayas (2 days, Nepal)
Module 2: Basics in GIS and Remote Sensing (3 days, Nepal)
Module 3: Remote Sensing-based hydrological data extraction and pre-processing (5 days, Nepal)
Module 4: Flood and drought forecasting (5 days, Nepal)
Module 5: Hazard mitigation and risk assessment (5 days, Nepal)

Intermediate period of case study preparation (8 weeks, home country)

Module 6: Watershed modeling (5 days, Netherlands)
Module 7: Socio-economic appraisal of watershed projects (5 days, Netherlands)
Module 8: Watershed protection & control (5 days, Netherlands)
Module 9: Evaluation and presentation of the case study (10 days, Netherlands)

Altogether 18 participants from Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Bhutan and Nepal are participating in the training course.

Number of water resources models, such as ArcHydro, DuFlow, GRIPs, HEC GeoHMS, Mike Basin, SWAT, were introduced during the first component of the training course. During the period, participants have defined the themes and their titles of the proposed case study related to water management issues, which are relevant to their home country and ICIMOD’s interest. The case study will be implemented and finalized during the third component of the training course at ITC, The Netherlands. (More on the Training

Training cum Workshop on Urban Hazard risk assessment for Lalitpur Municipality

Training cum Workshop on ‘User Needs Assessment for Developing and Establishing a GIS based DSS for Risk Management for Lalitpur Sub Metropolitan Office’ was organized in ICIMOD from 10 to 28 May in collaboration with International Institute for Geo-information Science and Earth Observations (ITC), The Netherlands and National Society for Earthquake Technology-Nepal (NSET-Nepal).  This was a follow up workshop of the training Course on “Institutionalization of Geo-information for Urban Disaster Management” (IGUDM) held in September 2003, jointly organized by ITC, ICIMOD, NSET-Nepal, and Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre (ADPC) Thailand, this course demonstrated the use of GIS and its application to municipality managements in different themes.  Total 14 participants from Lalitpur Sub-Metropolitan City Office (LSMCO) participated in the training and data from LSMCO were extensively used in the training to create interest among the participants.

Geo-informatics Training course on Forest Data Management

MENRIS together with Natural Resources Management (NRM) organized a ‘Training in GIS for Forest Data Management’ in ICIMOD from 14 to 25 June, to train forest officials in the preparation of forest resources inventory of Diyale Community Forest at Godawari using GIS & GPS. The concept on Management of Forest Resources, Forest Ecology, Bio diversity and Research was also delivered to the participants.  Total of 10 Rangers from DFO Lalitpur and 1 Field Assistant from ICIMOD demonstration site, Godavari, participated in the training.
