National Commission for Sustainable Development and National Sustainable Development Strategies Workshop The Workshop on National Commission for Sustainable Development (NCSD) and National Sustainable Development Strategies (NSDS) process was held in Kathmandu from 9 till 10 April. The workshop was organized to initiate the strategy plan development for sustainable development in Nepal. His Majesty’s Government of Nepal (HMG/N) made a commitment in the Agenda 21, to pursue an integrated policy in order to achieve sustainable development objectives, i.e. economic development, social equity and environmental conservation, which are mutually reinforcing. Agenda 21 called upon countries to develop their individual NSDS, which could be pursued through setting up of a national coordinating structure, such as NCSD. The workshop was attended by participants from the Ministry of Population and Environment, MOPE, National Planning Commission, NPC, United Nations Development Programme, UNDP, United Nations Environment Programme, Asia Pacific, UNEP-AP, the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, ICIMOD and other related institutions.
Workshop on Dissemination of National Environment Health Impact Assessment (EHIA) Guidelines

a Workshop on Dissemination of National Environment Health Impact
Assessment (EHIA) Guidelines and Finalization of its Implementation
Procedures, organized by National Health Research Council (NHRC) on
22 June. The objective of the workshop was to disseminate the EHIA
guidelines among the various stakeholders’ and finalize operationalization
procedures. In the same occasion, a handbook on Environment Health Impact
Assessment (EHIA) Guidelines was launched by Mr. Lok M. S. Karki,
Secretary, Ministry of Health.
A talk program was organized for Dr. Barry Haack, in ICIMOD, on Applied and Basic Remote Sensing/GIS Projects in Nepal on 3 June. He gave a review and summary of various projects in which he has been involved for Nepal since 1984. Some of his works include urbanization rates and land use/cover mapping in the Kathmandu Valley, modeling future growth in the valley, glacial monitoring and the use of spaceborn rada r (RADARSAT) for land cover mapping using Kathmandu as a study site. Dr. Haack is a Professor of Geography from George Mason University, USA, and a Visiting Scientist to ICIMOD.

Basanta Shrestha attended the Inception Meeting cum Workshop on the Implementation of the NORAD/UNEP project on National and Sub regional Sustainable Development Strategy organized by UNEP in Bangkok, Thailand from 22 to 25 June.
Ann L. Loomis and David P. Derry from US Department of State, Washington DC, USA and Indra Sharan KC from USAID visited MENRIS on 1 April. Tatiana Gallego-Lizon, from ADB headquarter, Philippines, Dr. Sangsup Ra and Nogendra Sapkota from ADB Nepal Resident Mission visited MENRIS on 21 April.
