Natural Hazard Mapping of SNP
Under the regional DSS-HKKH partnership Programme,
MENRIS took the initiative to develop the Natural Hazard component of the
Decision Support System (DSS) for Ecosystem Management in Sagarmatha
National Park. As a beginning, mapping landslide hazard and the hazard due
to Glacier Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) have been carried out.
Landslide hazard mapping: A geological map of the SNP has been
developed by compiling the results from various studies done earlier and
supplemented by interpretation of aerial photographs and satellite images.
A detailed land slide database has been developed by interpreting
Satellite images (IKONOS) of 2001, aerial photo (1992 at a scale of
1:50000) interpretation using stereoscopes, and topo sheet of 1997 at a
scale of 1:50000.

GLOF hazard mapping: An earlier study carried out by MENRIS
identified a number of potentially dangerous glacial lakes in Dudh Koshi
basin. This study aims to assess the hazard in case of GLOF
from Dig Tsho and Imja lakes which are potential dangerous lakes.

Data were generated and processed using HEC-GeoRAS and HEC-RAS modeling
tools. Different dam break scenarios are generated using flood wave and
breach models of NWS FLDWAV 2.0 modeling software. The output of the model
is used to map the areas which will be affected if there is a GLOF from
these lakes.
